Privacy Policy

TRUE 82 is a free, independent basketball game run by one person. This page says plainly what it collects, what it refuses to collect, and what signing in does and does not hand over. Last updated 13 October 2026.

The short version

You can play the entire game without an account and without telling TRUE 82 anything about yourself. There are no ads, no ad networks, no third-party analytics, and nothing is ever sold or shared for targeted advertising. If you choose to sign in, your email address stays with the sign-in provider and never reaches the game's own database.

What TRUE 82 never does

It does not build a fingerprint of your device, store or hash your IP address, use an advertising identifier, load a third-party tracker or ad pixel, buy or sell data about you, or use your information to train a model. There is no data broker in this. The analytics are written by the same person who wrote the game, and they post to true82.net and nowhere else.

Playing without an account

Game analytics. TRUE 82 records what happened in a session — which screen a visit started on, which mode was played, where a game was abandoned, whether a share worked — so the game can be made better. Those events go to true82.net/api/event, a first-party endpoint. They describe the game, not you.

One random browser identifier. To tell a returning player from a new one, TRUE 82 assigns a single random identifier and stores it in a secure first-party cookie named t82_rid, with a local-storage fallback, for up to 400 days. It is a random number. It is not derived from anything about you, and it is not joined to any other dataset. It is switched off entirely for traffic from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and for traffic whose location cannot be determined.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends either signal, it is recorded as a diagnostic for this strictly first-party measurement.

Player Traits votes. Votes at true82.net/traits are stored as anonymous tallies keyed by a one-way hash, never by the raw identifier. A vote cannot be traced back to a browser.

The Daily. The Daily keeps a small record on your own device — your official result and your streak — so those features work. That record stays in your browser.

Signing in

An account is optional. Everything in the single-player game works without one; an account exists so that leaderboards, your run history and shared draft rooms can know which runs are yours.

Sign-in is handled by Clerk (Clerk, Inc.), a dedicated authentication provider, acting as a processor for TRUE 82. Your email address, your password if you have one, and your connected social accounts live with Clerk under their privacy policy. TRUE 82 verifies the signed token Clerk issues and reads your email address in your own browser only, to show you which address you are signed in with.

The game's own database never receives your email address. That is a design decision, not a promise about intent: when you have an account, the rows TRUE 82 stores about you are an opaque account identifier from Clerk, a short public tag, the display name you choose, the cosmetic title and frame you have earned, and two timestamps. There is no email column. There is no name column. There is no column for anything a sign-in provider told us about you.

What an account stores as you play: the runs you submit — the mode, the board you were dealt, the picks you made and the record the server's own replay produced — plus any draft rooms you join and the picks you make in them. A run is re-simulated on the server and only the server's own result is stored.

Signing in with Google, TikTok or Apple

These are optional alternatives to an email code. Nothing is requested beyond what is needed to know that you are you.

Google. With your consent on Google's own screen, TRUE 82's sign-in provider receives your email address, your basic profile (name and profile picture) and a Google account identifier. Scopes requested: openid, userinfo.email, userinfo.profile. Nothing else in your Google account is requested or accessible — no Drive, no Gmail, no contacts, no calendar.

TikTok. With your consent on TikTok's own screen, TRUE 82's sign-in provider receives your TikTok display name, avatar and an account identifier (user.info.basic), and your public profile link, bio and verified status (user.info.profile). Those two scopes are what the sign-in provider's TikTok integration requires; the second is not something the game asked for and nothing in TRUE 82 reads it. Neither reaches the game's own database, which stores only the opaque account identifier described above. TRUE 82 does not request and cannot see your videos, your drafts, your follower or like counts, your direct messages or your email address, and it will never post, upload or share anything to your TikTok account. Sign-in is the whole of the integration.

Apple. With your consent on Apple's own screen, TRUE 82's sign-in provider receives your name, an email address and an Apple account identifier. Scopes requested: name, email. Apple lets you choose Hide My Email; if you do, the address is a private relay ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com that forwards to you, and your real address is never shared. Either way it makes no difference to the game. Apple sends your name only the first time you authorise, so changing it later at Apple does not change it here. Nothing else in your Apple account is requested or accessible — no iCloud, no contacts, no photos, no purchases.

In every case the game's own database stores only the opaque account identifier described above. You can disconnect a social account at any time from the account sheet in the game.

What other players can see

A leaderboard shows the display name you chose, your result, and any cosmetic title you have earned. It does not show your email address, your sign-in method or anything else. If you would rather not be listed, do not submit runs — or delete your account, which removes your rows.

Where the basketball data comes from

Player and team records come from Basketball Reference and Stathead, maintained by Sports Reference LLC, and are used for non-commercial commentary and historical reference. That is public sports history, not personal data about you.

Donations

The optional donate button hands you off to PayPal. If you donate, PayPal handles the payment under its own privacy policy. TRUE 82 never sees your card or bank details and does not receive your name or address from PayPal.

Children

TRUE 82 is for players 13 and older. It is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, write to the address below and it will be deleted.

Your choices

Turn off retention measurement: open your browser's developer console on true82.net and run t82RetentionOptOut(). t82RetentionOptIn() reverses it. The opt-out is specific to TRUE 82 and is remembered on that browser.

Start over: clearing site data for true82.net, or switching browser or device, begins a new anonymous identity with no link to the old one.

See or delete your account: the account sheet in the game shows what is stored about you, and deleting your account removes your rows from the game's database and your identity from Clerk. If you would rather it be done by hand, or want a copy of your data, write to the address below.

Keeping and sharing

Analytics events and leaderboard runs are kept for as long as the game runs; the browser identifier expires after 400 days. Data is stored on Cloudflare, which hosts the site and its database. Nothing is shared with anyone else except the processors named on this page — Clerk for sign-in, Cloudflare for hosting, PayPal for donations — and where the law requires it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the change is noted on the game page. Material changes affecting accounts will be shown to you in the game.
